An account number is the figure identifying one particular account. Yours, and nobody else's.
Banking uses eight digits in Britain alongside a six-digit sort code, and the two together identify where money should go. Utilities, insurers and shops all issue their own. The number is not a secret in the way a password is, since anybody paying you needs it, though giving it out with other details is how a great deal of fraud starts. The IBAN is the international version.
