aimless

UK/ˈeɪm.ləs/US/ˈeɪm.ləs/
adjectiveC1Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #12,090 of 15,258neutral

Aimless means having no purpose or direction. Moving, and not towards anything.

It describes wandering, conversation and whole periods of life, and aimless drifting is a phrase that carries real melancholy. The word is gentler than pointless, since aimless describes the absence of a goal rather than the absence of value, and an aimless afternoon can be a pleasure. The adverb aimlessly usually attaches to a verb of movement. Purposeless is the formal equivalent.
