albeit

UK/ɔːlˈbiː.ɪt/US/ɔlˈbi.ɪt/
prepositionC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,225 of 15,258mostly written

Albeit means although or even if. Albeit briefly, albeit with reservations, a win albeit a narrow one.

It introduces a concession without a full clause, which is what makes it useful: albeit briefly says although it was brief in two words. It is one word, made from all be it, and writing it as three is a mistake.

Where it comes from

A contraction of the Middle English phrase al be it, meaning although it be.

Built from

  • althagh it be that · Middle English — although it be that
  • been · Middle English — to be

From the Middle English - expression al be it (that), itself shortened from althagh it be that (“although it be that”), and thus composed from al + be + it.
