allegedly

UK/əˈlɛdʒ.ɪd.li/US/əˈlɛdʒ.ɪd.li/
adverbC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,573 of 15,258leans written

Allegedly means as claimed but not yet proven. Allegedly stole, allegedly involved, he allegedly said.

It is the single most important word in court reporting, because printing an accusation as fact before a verdict is contempt and defamation both. It is also used sarcastically, and Have I Got News For You made a comic institution of saying it after any risky claim. Note allege, allegation; and that alleged and allegedly are placed carefully — the alleged offence, not the alleged man.
