An amethyst is a purple form of quartz. An amethyst ring, deep amethyst, a raw amethyst.

The purple comes from iron and radiation in the crystal, and heating turns it yellow, which is how much citrine is made. The Greek name means not drunk, from a belief that the stone kept a wine drinker sober.

From Middle English ametist, from Old French ametiste (French améthyste), from Ancient Greek ἀμέθυστος (“not drunk”), from ἀ- (“not”) + μεθύω (“to be drunk”), from μέθυ (“wine”). The name was based on the ancient belief that amethyst gemstones could prevent intoxication. People in ancient Greece and Rome would wear amethyst or drink from cups made of amethyst to ward off the effects of alcohol.
