anise

UK/ˈæn.ɪs/US/ˈæn.ɪs/
nounC1Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #14,331 of 15,258neutral

Anise is a plant whose seed gives a liquorice flavour. Oil of anise, anise seed, flavoured with anise.

It is a different plant from star anise, which comes from a Chinese tree, though both hold the same compound and taste alike. Pastis, ouzo and sambuca are all built on it, and they turn cloudy with water for that reason.
