Other forms: appellations
An appellation is a name or a title given to somebody. Earned the appellation, the appellation stuck, a grand appellation.
It is formal and often slightly amused, since the word suits titles somebody was given rather than chose. In wine it names a protected region, and an appellation on a French label is a legal guarantee of origin.

appellation is a name.
The Latin is to call by name, the same calling behind an appeal, when you call formally on somebody. An appellation is simply what a thing is called.
