arabic

UK/ˈæɹəbɪk/US/ˈæɹəbɪk/
adjectiveB1+2 meaningsCommon in everyday speech and writing · #4,507 of 15,258leans written

Arabic is the language of much of the Middle East and North Africa, written from right to left. Learn Arabic, in Arabic, Arabic script.

It is always capitalised. Modern Standard Arabic is the formal written form used across the whole region, and the spoken dialects differ enough that speakers from Morocco and Iraq may struggle with each other. It is the liturgical language of Islam. Note Arabic numerals, which are the digits English uses and which actually came from India by way of the Arab world; and that Arab, Arabic and Arabian are used of people, language and place respectively.
