archaeology

UK/ˌɑː.kiˈɒl.ə.d͡ʒi/US/ˌɑɹ.kiˈɑ.lə.d͡ʒi/
nounB1+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,232 of 15,258mostly written

Archaeology is the study of ancient life by digging up what it left behind. Study archaeology, a dig in archaeology, marine archaeology.

It works from rubbish as much as from treasure, because a midden tells you what people ate every day and a gold hoard tells you about one rich person. Modern archaeology uses radiocarbon dating and now DNA, and destroys the site as it reads it.
