Other forms: areas
Area is the amount of flat surface a shape covers. Calculate the area, floor area, the area of a circle.
It is measured in square units — square metres, hectares, acres — and doubling a shape's dimensions quadruples its area, which is the single most useful fact about it. The everyday sense is simply a region: a rural area, the local area, in this area. Note area of expertise, meaning a field; and that the Latin meant a level open space or threshing floor.
