An aspen is a poplar whose leaves tremble in the slightest wind. A stand of aspen, aspen leaves, trembling like an aspen.

The trembling has a cause: the leaf stalk is flattened at right angles to the blade, so the leaf twists at the least breath of air. A grove is often one organism joined underground, and one in Utah is among the oldest living things known.
