austria

UK/ˈɒstɹi.ə/US/ˈɒstɹiə/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,912 of 15,258mostly written

Austria is the Alpine country of Vienna, waltzes and Mozart. Travel to Austria, born in Austria, the Austrian Alps.

It is landlocked, mountainous and small, and it was the centre of an empire that ran much of central Europe until 1918 — which is why Vienna is grander than a city of its present size would otherwise be. German is the language. Note that Austria and Australia are constantly confused by visitors, to the point that Vienna shops sell souvenirs about it.

Built from

  • rīhhi · Old High German — realm

Austria Borrowed from Latin Austria. From Latin Austria, a Latinization of Old High German Ōstarrīhhi, the first element of which means "east" and stems from Proto-Germanic austraz (“eastern”), and the second element of which is rīhhi (“realm”). See east, eastern for more. Distantly cognate to Australia: it derives from the same Proto-Indo-European root, but via Latin, where it came to mean “south” rather than “east”. Compare also Austrasia.
