authorisation

UK/ˌɔːθəɹaɪˈzeɪʃən/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,256 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: authorisations

Authorisation is official permission to act. Seek authorisation, without authorisation, authorisation code.

It is separate from authentication, which proves who you are — authorisation decides what you may then do, and confusing the two is a standing source of security failures. In banking, an authorisation holds funds before a payment settles. Note the American spelling authorization with a z.
