nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,820 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: beanies

A beanie is a soft close-fitting knitted hat. Pull on a beanie, a woollen beanie, wear a beanie indoors.

It has no brim and no structure, which is what separates it from a cap. In Britain the older word is a woolly hat, and beanie arrived from America. It sits above the ears or is pulled down over them, and the choice is a whole matter of style.
