bedding

nounB12 meaningsVery rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speechToo rare in one of the two pools to compare — fewer than 20 uses in speech or in writing

Bedding is everything that goes on a bed — the sheets, the pillowcases, the duvet and its cover. You change the bedding on a Sunday, and a hotel room smells of clean bedding when you open the door.

It is uncountable: you buy new bedding, never a bedding. For animals it means the soft stuff they sleep on — straw in a stable, wood shavings or shredded paper in a hamster's cage — and it needs changing just as often. Gardeners have a use of their own: bedding plants are the cheap bright flowers sold in trays and planted out for a single summer.
