birdsong

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #12,434 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: birdsongs

Birdsong is the musical calling of birds, especially at dawn. Wake to birdsong, the dawn chorus of birdsong, recorded birdsong.

It is mostly males and mostly about territory and mating rather than joy. Young birds learn it from adults and have regional dialects, and a bird raised in silence sings a rough approximation and never gets it right.
