Other forms: blacksmiths
A blacksmith is the craftsman who shapes hot iron with a hammer. The village blacksmith, a blacksmith's forge, work as a blacksmith.
The black in the name is the iron — a whitesmith worked in tin and a goldsmith in gold. Blacksmiths made and repaired almost every metal object in a village and shod the horses, which is why the trade was central until the twentieth century. Farrier is the specialist who shoes horses now. Note smithy, the workshop; smith, the surname, which is the commonest in the English-speaking world for exactly this reason.
