blob

UK/blɒb/US/blɑb/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,711 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: blobs

A blob is a small round mass of something soft. A blob of paint, a blob of cream, blobs everywhere.

It has no fixed shape and no edges worth speaking of, which is why it suits paint, cream and glue. It is deliberately imprecise: a blob is what you call something when the shape does not matter. As a verb it means to fall in such a mass. Note blobby; and that the word is probably imitative, from the same family as bleb and blubber.

blob is a soft mass.

Where it comes from

Middle English blob is probably imitative, from a family of words about soft round wet things — bleb, blubber, bubble. None of them was borrowed from anywhere.

From Middle English blob (“attested in blobby”). Possibly imitative of the sound, similarly to bleb and blubber.
