Other forms: blogs, blogging, blogged
A blog is a personal website where somebody writes posts. Start a blog, read her blog, a food blog.
Posts appear newest first, which is the format's one defining feature. Blogs were the dominant form of personal writing online in the 2000s before social platforms absorbed most of it, and they have had a modest revival among people who want to own what they publish. Note blogger, blogging; and that blog is short for weblog, cut in 1999 as a joke — we blog.
1nounblogA personal website where somebody writes posts.
“She started a blog about her travels, with photos from every country she visits.”
2verbwriteTo write such posts.
“He blogs about gardening every week and has built up a loyal readership.”
blog is a website.
Blog is a shortening of weblog, coined in 1999 when Peter Merholz split the word as we blog. The joke became the standard term within a couple of years.
From weblog. weblog, as if it means we blog. The Oxford English Dictionary says the shortened word was coined 23 May 1999 and references the "Jargon Watch" article in an issue of an online magazine which attributes the shortening to Peter Merholz. The form blog is now so much more common than weblog that some misspell the latter as webblog, as if from web + blog.
