Other forms: bloodstains
A bloodstain is the dark mark blood leaves on cloth or floor once it dries. Rust-brown by then, not red.
The word belongs above all to crime writing: bloodstains on a sleeve, a bloodstain the shape of a hand, the bloodstain pattern that tells an investigator where somebody was standing. In ordinary life it is the thing you are trying to get out of a shirt with cold water and no success. The adjective bloodstained appears in novels more often than the noun — a bloodstained bandage, bloodstained hands — and it tends to carry guilt along with the blood.
