A board game is a tabletop game played with pieces, dice, or cards on a flat surface. Play a board game, a family board game, board game night.
The oldest known ones are thousands of years old, and chess, go and backgammon have outlived every empire that played them. The modern designer board game revived the form in the 1990s by replacing luck and elimination with choices. Note that a board game is played on a board and a card game is not.
