bodyguard

UK/ˈbɒdiɡɑːd/US/ˈbɑːdiɡɑːɹd/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,400 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: bodyguards

A bodyguard is the strong person paid to keep someone famous safe. Hire a bodyguard, the bodyguard stepped in, a personal bodyguard.

The job is mostly planning: routes, exits and crowd lines are worked out in advance, and a good one is never seen doing anything dramatic. Size matters less than attention. Note that the compound is body plus guard, where body means the person themselves, as in somebody and nobody.
