booking

UK/ˈbʊkɪŋ/US/ˈbʊkɪŋ/

Other forms: bookings

A booking is the arrangement you make in advance so that a room, a seat or a table is kept for you. Make a booking, confirm a booking, cancel a booking.

It is the British word; American English says reservation for restaurants and hotels, and both are understood everywhere. There is a second sense from football and rugby that has nothing to do with travel: a booking is a yellow card, from the referee writing the player's name in a book. And in policing, booking somebody is recording their details after arrest. So the word covers a holiday, a caution and an arrest, and only the first is good news.
