Other forms: breakouts
A breakout is a dramatic escape from somewhere locked — a prison, a camp, a compound. A mass breakout, plan a breakout.
It has spread well beyond escapes. A breakout role is the one that makes an actor famous; a breakout session at a conference is a small group splitting off from the main room; and a breakout in skin is a sudden crop of spots. In finance, a breakout is a price moving decisively out of a range. Note that it is one word as a noun and two as a verb — break out — which is the same rule as for turnout and workout.
