To bridge the gap is to reduce a difference between two things far enough apart that somebody has to build something across.
It takes between: bridge the gap between school and work, between the generations, between what was promised and what arrived. The metaphor is doing real work — a bridge does not close a gap, it lets you cross one — so the phrase concedes that the difference is still there. Close the gap is the version that claims more, and narrow the gap is the honest halfway house.
