buffering

nounB1+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #14,112 of 15,258leans written

Buffering is the pause while more of a stream is fetched. Stuck buffering, endless buffering, the video kept buffering.

The player downloads ahead of what you are watching so that a slow moment in the connection does not stop the picture, and buffering is what you see when it has run out of that stored margin. A larger buffer means fewer pauses and a longer wait to start.
