buffing

UK/ˈbʌfɪŋ/US/ˈbʌfɪŋ/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #11,533 of 15,258neutral

Buffing is rubbing the nails smooth and shiny. Buffing the nails, a buffing block, finish with buffing.

It works by flattening the ridges rather than by adding anything, which is why the shine lasts a week or two and needs no polish. Overdoing the buffing thins the nail, so once a month is the usual advice.
