Where it comes from

The word comes from Hamburg, the German city, by way of the Hamburg steak served to emigrants crossing the Atlantic. English then heard hamburger as ham plus burger, and cut it in half to make a new word — which is why every burger since is named after a mistake.

Clipping of hamburger. a clipping of hamburger, it as ham. First use appears c. 1937. Sense 5 is likely a back-formation from Burgerland.
