Other forms: burritos

A burrito is the big rolled Mexican wrap stuffed with rice and beans. Order a burrito, a bean burrito, wrap the burrito.

It is northern Mexican and became famous through California, where the rice inside is largely an American addition. The name is Spanish for a little donkey, and nobody is certain why — the likeliest guess is the shape of a rolled pack.

Spanish burrito, diminutive of burro (“donkey”), from burrico (“donkey”), from Latin burricus (“small horse”), from burrus (“red-brown”), from Ancient Greek πυρρός (“flame-colored”), from πῦρ (“fire”). A possible origin is due to its resemblance to a rolled up pack as typically carried by donkeys, making it an example of synecdoche.
