Other forms: calibres

Calibre is the width of the barrel, and so of the round. A large calibre, calibre of the weapon, small-calibre rifle.

It is measured across the bore, in millimetres or in hundredths of an inch, which is why the same round has two names in two systems. Of a person, calibre means quality — a candidate of real calibre — and that is much the commoner use. Note the American spelling caliber.
