callipers

UK/ˈkæl.ɪ.pəz/US/ˈkæl.ɪ.pɚz/
nounC1Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #14,651 of 15,258neutral

Callipers are a measuring tool with two arms that close on an object to read its thickness. A pair of callipers, vernier callipers, measure it with callipers.

The arms grip the object and a scale reads off the gap between them, which is far more exact than a ruler laid alongside. The word also names the metal supports fitted to a weak leg, and the parts of a disc brake that squeeze the disc.
