Other forms: castaways

A castaway is a shipwreck survivor stranded on a lonely shore. A lone castaway, rescue the castaway, castaways on the island.

The word implies being thrown ashore rather than choosing to stay, which is what separates it from a hermit. It is fixed in English by Robinson Crusoe and by the radio programme that asks guests which records they would take. Note cast away, written as two words for the verb.
