Other forms: catkins
A catkin is a soft hanging spike of tiny flowers on a spring tree. Hazel catkins.
It is wind-pollinated, which is why it hangs loose and produces so much pollen. A catkin appears before the leaves so nothing blocks the wind.

katteken — catkin
English, today
catkin
From Middle Dutch katteken (“catkin”) literally “little cat”. So named due to the resemblance of lengthier kinds to a kitten's tail, or, perhaps more probably, the fine fur found on some catkins (compare the pictures). Cognate with German Kätzchen, modern Dutch katje; compare French chaton (“kitten”; “catkin”). by surface analysis, en + cat + kin.
