cellular

UK/ˈsɛl.ju.lə/US/ˈsɛl.ju.lɚ/
adjectiveB2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,966 of 15,258leans written

Cellular means made up of tiny units, or working through a network of them. Cellular structure, a cellular network, cellular biology.

The phone sense comes from the design: the area is divided into cells each with its own mast, so the same frequencies can be reused a few cells away — which is what made mobile phones possible at all. In biology it means to do with cells.
