Central heating is a system that warms a whole building from one boiler. Hot water round a circuit of radiators.
It reached ordinary British homes in the 1960s and 1970s and changed how houses were used, since before it people lived in one heated room and closed the doors on the rest. The parts are a boiler, a pump, radiators and a thermostat. Heat pumps are the current replacement for gas boilers. Bleeding the radiators every autumn is the one bit of maintenance everybody is told about.
