chapped

UK/t͡ʃæpt/US/t͡ʃæpt/
adjectiveB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #11,417 of 15,258mostly spoken

Chapped means cracked and sore from cold and wind. Chapped lips, chapped hands, badly chapped.

The damage is dryness rather than cold itself: cold air holds little moisture and wind carries it away, so the skin loses water faster than it replaces it. Lips chap first because they have no oil glands of their own. Note that the older verb chap means to split.
