cheating

UK/ˈt͡ʃiːtɪŋ/US/ˈt͡ʃiːtɪŋ/
nounB1Very common — you will meet it every day · #1,594 of 15,258leans spoken

Cheating is breaking the rules secretly to win. Caught cheating, cheating in exams, accused of cheating.

The secrecy is essential — breaking a rule openly is a foul and doing it hidden is cheating. In relationships it means being unfaithful. Note that the word comes from escheat, a legal term for property reverting to the crown, because the officials who handled it were held to be swindlers.
