Checked describes cloth patterned with squares of two colours. A checked shirt, checked trousers, a checked tablecloth.
Checked is the British form and checkered the American, for the same pattern. Named checks include gingham, tartan, houndstooth and Prince of Wales check. The word is also the past tense of check in all its other senses — checked the figures, checked in, checked out — and checked baggage is luggage handed over at an airport. Note chequered in British English, which is spelled differently and is used figuratively: a chequered career, meaning one with bad patches in it.
