checksum

nounC1Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #14,974 of 15,258Too rare in one of the two pools to compare — fewer than 20 uses in speech or in writing

Other forms: checksums

A checksum is a number used to check that data arrived unchanged. Verify the checksum, the checksum failed, a checksum mismatch.

It works by computing a value from the data and comparing it at the other end, so any change gives a different number. A cryptographic one goes further, since it is built so that nobody can forge a file matching a given checksum.
