chipped

UK/t͡ʃɪpt/US/t͡ʃɪpt/
adjectiveB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,335 of 15,258leans spoken

Chipped means having a small piece broken off the edge. A chipped mug, chipped paint, a chipped tooth.

It describes a small clean loss from an edge, which is what china, paint, enamel and teeth all do. It is usually a fault and, on old furniture, sometimes evidence of age worth keeping. A chipped tooth is repaired with composite bonding rather than replaced. Note chipped as a past tense of chip in every sense; and that a microchipped pet is a different word entirely.
