cholesterol

UK/kəˈlɛstəɹɒl/US/kəˈlɛstəɹɒl/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,131 of 15,258neutral

Cholesterol is a fatty substance in the blood that can block the arteries. High cholesterol, cholesterol levels, lower your cholesterol.

The body makes most of its own, so diet matters less than people were long told. It comes in two carried forms, and the useful distinction is between the kind that deposits in artery walls and the kind that carries it away. Every cell needs some to work at all.
