cliche

US/kliˈʃeɪ/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,060 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: cliches

A cliche is a phrase so overused it no longer says anything. Avoid cliches, a tired cliche, a walking cliche.

The problem is not that it is untrue but that it is unread — a reader's eye slides over it. It is often written with an accent on the final e, and either way is accepted in English. The origin is a printer's word: it named a stereotype plate, cast so the same block could be printed again and again.
