come to an agreement

phraseB2Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

To come to an agreement is to settle on terms that both sides will accept. Two people who have been arguing since Tuesday finally shake hands over a kitchen table.

It takes with about whom and on or about what: they came to an agreement with the neighbours about the fence. The phrase carries the length of the argument inside it, which is why it fits divorces, strikes and border disputes and sounds odd about lunch. Reach an agreement is the same thing in a newspaper, and come to terms is the same thing with more grudging in it.
