condor

UK/ˈkɒndɔː/US/ˈkɑnˌdoɹ/
nounB2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,718 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: condors

A condor is an enormous mountain vulture of the Americas. An Andean condor, the condor soared, a condor's wingspan.

The Andean one has the largest wing area of any bird and barely flaps, riding mountain air for hours. The Californian one fell to twenty-two birds in the 1980s and every survivor was caught for breeding — a gamble that worked. The name is Quechua.
