consortium

UK/kənˈsɔː.ti.əm/US/kənˈsoɹ.ʃəm/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,578 of 15,258mostly written

Other forms: consortia, consortiums

A consortium is a group of companies acting together on one project. A consortium of banks, form a consortium, the winning consortium.

It is how enormous projects get built, since no single firm carries the risk of a tunnel or a stadium alone. The members stay separate companies, which is what distinguishes a consortium from a merger.
