Consummation is the bringing of something to its perfect finish. The consummation of years of work, a devout consummation, consummation of the marriage.
In law it has a narrow and specific sense about marriage, and non-consummation was once a ground for annulment. The general sense is grand and literary, and Hamlet's devoutly to be wished is the best-known use.
