counselling

nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,145 of 15,258neutral

Counselling is guided conversation that helps somebody work things out. Have counselling, bereavement counselling, a counselling service.

The counsellor mostly listens and reflects rather than advising, which is the point most often misunderstood about it — the answers are meant to come from the person. It differs from psychotherapy chiefly in depth and length. Note the American spelling counseling with one l; and counsel, meaning advice.
