countryside

UK/ˈkʌn.tɹiˌsaɪd/US/ˈkʌn.tɹiˌsaɪd/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,410 of 15,258neutral

The countryside is the green open land outside towns, with farms and fields. Live in the countryside, walk in the countryside, protect the countryside.

In Britain almost none of it is wild — it is farmed land shaped by centuries of work, and what looks natural is a landscape managed for sheep, timber or game. The right to roam gives access to much of it in Scotland and to less in England.
