curling

UK/ˈkɜːlɪŋ/US/ˈkəɹlɪŋ/
nounB2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,419 of 15,258leans written

Curling is a game of sliding heavy stones towards a target on ice. Play curling, a curling rink, the curling final.

The sweeping is not decoration: brushing the ice ahead of the stone melts a film of water and makes it travel further and straighter. Every stone used in serious competition comes from one small Scottish island, Ailsa Craig.
