dahlia

UK/ˈdeɪ.li.ə/US/ˈdæl.jə/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,269 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: dahlias

A dahlia is a tuber-grown garden plant with one large bloom on each tall stem. Lift the dahlias, a bed of dahlias, a dahlia show.

The tubers must be lifted before the frost in cold areas and stored dry until spring. There is no blue dahlia and never has been: the species lacks the gene, and breeders have chased one for two centuries without success.
